Amazing Facts About India On 68th Independence Day

A Very Happy Independence Day to all! The most auspicious day in the Indian history-the day India got freedom. India will celebrate its 68th Independence Day, but celebrating is not quite enough sometimes.  Do you know what makes India different and unique from other countries?


The answer is never ending one but we have few amazing facts about Indian history and present that will make you feel proud for the country you live in.  Did you know chess originated in India or that India has largest number of post offices in the world? If not, here are some spectacular facts about India that proves why it is called as “Incredible India.”


(#) Every Indian is proud on its country, but do you know how India derived its name? ‘India’ got its name from the River Indus where the early settler made their homes.Although the name, Bharat came from Sanskrit originated name “Bharat Ganarajya.”


(#) It was 7th August, 1906 when the National flag was hoisted for the very first time at Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta. The flag possessed horizontal strips of red, yellow and green. The red strip at the top had eight white lotuses imprinted on it in a row. The green strip had a white sun on the left and a white hemispherical star on the right.


(#) Everyone knows that the Indian constitution came into existence on 26th January 1950 but most of you don’t know that it is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world, containing 448 articles in 25 parts, 12 schedules, 5 appendices and 98 amendments.


The Constitution of India is a handwritten one both in English and Hindi, not typeset or printed. The original copies are kept in special helium-filled cases in the Library of the Parliament of India.


(#) Yoga- the physical, mental, and spiritual practice that aims to transform body and mind originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The earliest accounts of yoga-practices are to be found in the Buddhist Nikayas and later on the Gurus from India introduced yoga to the west.


In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world.


(#) India has the largest number of Post Offices with around 155,618 post offices and over 566,000 employees; India has the largest postal network in the world. The modern postal service in India is more than 150 years old.


(#) Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world, employing over a 1.4 million people. Also India has the second largest railway network in the world under a single management and carrying over more than 30 million passengers in a day.


(#) India has the second largest pool of Scientist and Engineers in the World. Every third engineer at      Apple is an Indian. Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus are studies that are originated in India.  The 'Place Value System' and the 'Decimal System' were developed in India in 100 B.C.


(#) India is the largest democracy in the world, the 6th largest Country in the world, and one of the most ancient civilizations. The Indus Valley Civilization, which spread and prospered in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent from c. 3300 to 1300 BCE
